Missions

At the heart of Jesus' teaching was the missional command to love God, to love our neighbors, and to make fully devoted followers of Jesus:

"The most important commandment is this: 'Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.' The second is equally important: 'Love your nieghbor as yourself.'"
                                                        Mark 12:29-31 New Living Translation

"Go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey the commands I have given you."
                                                   Matthew 28:19-20 New Living Translation

Here at Wilshire Avenue, we seek to live these commands both locally and globally. Through the following opportunities for local service and global mission, you can get involved in the "Great Commission" that Jesus gave us.

LOCAL OUTREACH
Heart of Downtown Food Bank
Our food bank opened its doors to the public in December 2008. Through this ministry we have helped feed hundreds of local familes. The food bank is open every Sunday from 2 - 4pm. If you would like more information or would like to volunteer, please contact Pastor Mark McCormick, Director at 714-526-2265, ext. 105.

SHORT TERM MISSION TRIPS
Our goal is to have 20% of our congregation actively involved in short term mission trips each year. In 2009 and 2010, we have sent people to the Appalachian mountains of Kentucky, The Gleanings in Fresno, Boston, South Africa, Guatemala, & Serbia. Past trips have included Africa, New Orleans, Kentucky, Washington, and New York.

The brochure for our next "Gleanings for the Hungry" trip in 2011 is available to download below.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT
We financially support local outreach organizations such as Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Fullerton Interfaith Emergency Services and Intervarsity Christian Fellowship as well as global organizations such as Colina de Luz, an orphanage in La Gloria, Mexico, and our missionaries in Africa, Guatemala, Thailand and Asia.

LONG TERM MISSION COMMITMENTS
We have sent missionaries from our congregation to the mission field. We currently support long term missionaries in Guatemala, South Africa and Serbia. We have sent another couple to serve in South Africa in May 2010 to serve for 1 to 3 years.
